We are proud to announce a new milestone for clean energy: the world’s largest rooftop installation of vertical solar panels has just been completed on top of Tromsøterminalen in northern Norway.
Vertical solar installation on top of Tromsøterminalen, Norway
With 1600 VPV units from Over Easy Solar and a total capacity of 320 kWp, the project sets a new global benchmark for vertical rooftop solar - surpassing our own previous record at the Norwegian National Football Stadium.
Traditional solar panels are usually installed at an angle, but vertical solar opens new opportunities - especially in northern latitudes. By mounting panels vertically, rooftops can:
Capture more energy from low-angle sunlight, which is common in the north.
Generate more electricity in the morning and afternoon, when demand is highest and electricity prices are typically more expensive.
Stay clear of snow accumulation, improving year-round performance.
Remain easy to access and maintain, with space to move between rows of panels.

This installation demonstrates that vertical solar is not just a technical innovation - it’s a game-changer for the solar industry, unlocking the potential of rooftops that were previously seen as less suitable for solar power.
Our CEO, Trygve Mongstad, highlights the significance of this achievement:
It’s fantastic to see such a large solar installation in Tromsø. As far as I know, this is now the city’s largest solar system, and the world’s largest vertical rooftop installation. Vertical solar panels are very well suited for northern latitudes and snowy regions, so we hope this becomes a model project for others who want to invest in sustainable power production from flat rooftops in the north.
Trygve Mongstad, CEO, Over Easy Solar
For Tromsø - a city north of the Arctic Circle - this project is more than just an installation. It’s a symbol of how renewable energy can thrive even in the most challenging climates.
The world's largest installation of vertical solar panels on a rooftop
This achievement would not have been possible without the expertise and commitment of our partner Enøk Total. Together, we have shown what is possible when innovation, engineering, and sustainability come together with a clear vision and an open mindset to find the right solution:
For the customer, we recommended Over Easy, as this was the most optimal system for both snow and wind conditions, while also ensuring good energy yield. The short installation time was also an important factor. We are very satisfied with the system, and confident that this is the right system for the building.
Arne Christian Bredesen, Technical Project manager, ENØK Total
The project has also been promoted and supported by Ishavskraft and Sparebank1 Nord-Norge. The client is Tromsøterminalen Eiendom AS - and the tenant, Tromsøterminalen AS, will benefit from cheaper energy for the freezing terminal.
Vertical solar (VPV) is no longer just a bold idea - it is becoming a practical solution that can transform how we think about roofs. Whether on large facilities or smaller rooftops, vertical panels are proving their ability to deliver reliable clean energy, simplify maintenance, and optimize limited rooftop space.
The record-breaking installation at Tromsøterminalen highlights how far vertical solar has come - and where it can take us next. By rethinking the role of rooftops in the built environment, vertical solar is helping accelerate the transition toward greener, smarter, and more resilient cities.
