The SOAP Bible Study Method is the simplest tool for reading and engaging with the Bible, God’s written word to those who want to know Him in a personal way. It can be life-changing.
It’s based on a simple acrostic shared in the book, “The Divine Mentor” by Wayne Cordeiro. Here are the components and how to use them:
S – SCRIPTURE
“S” stands for Scripture. Read a particular chapter or passage from the Bible. It doesn’t have to be long. While you read through the passage ask the Lord to show you the one or two verses that He wants to use to speak to your heart. I copy this verse word-for-word in my journal.
O – OBSERVATION
“O” stands for Observations. Once you have picked out the one or two verses that you will dwell on during your time in the Bible, begin to make observations about these verses. What is it about that verse/passage that has your attention the most? Does it connect with something going on in your life right now? If so, how? What truth does it speak about your situation?
A – APPLICATION
“A” stands for Application. Once you have made your observations allow the Lord to apply these to your own life. Some like to put the application in the form of a question. You don’t have to but for some reason this really helps me.
P – PRAYER
“P” stands for prayer. Talk to the Lord about all that He has revealed to you through His Word. I write this out, word-for-word in my journal.
Finally, I give all of my entries a title and add them to an index at the back of my journal for quick reference. I include the passage I read as a secondary reference.
